When she moved to Florida twenty years ago, Dellani Oakes had no idea that the history was so rich and fascinating. Visiting St. Augustine for the first time about fifteen years ago while on a field trip with her son, she felt the allure of the country's oldest city, deciding then to write a story based there. It wasn't until nearly twelve years later that "Indian Summer" took its final form.
Dellani is a former A.P. English teacher, newspaper columnist, photographer, substitute teacher and Mary Kay lady. This means, she can correct your grammar, take your picture, write about, handle an entire classroom full of kids and give skincare & makeup advice without breaking a sweat. When she isn't being one of the above, she is an avid writer, spending every possible moment immersed in her other worlds. "Indian Summer" is her only young adult/ historical adventure novel. She is currently researching a sequel. Dellani also has a science fiction series set to debut this fall.
In the year 1739, life in St. Augustine, Florida was rife with tension. The Spanish & English had been at war for years, each claiming the same territory on the east coast of the New World. For the people of St. Augustine, war is commonplace. It is in this environment that Gabriella Deza, youngest daughter of the Spanish Governor, anticipates her step into adulthood.
As she stands poised on the brink of becoming a woman, she discovers that life isn't quite like she thought it was. Her life changes dramatically when her father's assistant, Manuel Enriques, declares his love for her. However, the discovery of a spy in their midst keeps the young couple apart for Manuel, acting as her father's agent, must investigate and track the spy's movements in order to protect the town.
Manuel sets a trap for the spy, unfortunately, Gabriella is caught in it and kidnapped. Join Gabriella and Manuel as they embark on a voyage of intrigue and espionage. Will it tear them apart? Or will their blossoming love bind them together?

Find Linda Bryan Sabin and The Sound Snatcher How the Vacuum Got Its Noise at www.thewordweaver.com Children’s Books created to instill a love of language and to restore language to its higher purpose, the true art of communication and help children develop a lifelong connection to the power of words.
A born teacher and writer, Linda believes children should experience stories read out loud, be exposed to the texture, the feel and the smell of a real book in their hands. Linda sees and uses words as a weaver uses threads, ribbons, twine, buttons laces and bright gems. Woven in precisely the right way, with the utmost care her stories are a rich tapestry of expression and discovery. Of course words have their primary meaning, but there is more; rhyme, associations, simile, metaphor and a whole host of contributors to how we express ourselves. Like music, the rhythm of language is one of the most compelling aspects of Linda’s stories.

Pat McCarthy
I taught elementary school for 30 years, so I have a pretty
good idea of what kids like and what they can read at different levels. I have
had 14 books published, all for kids. But I’m most excited about my new book,
Heading West: Life with the Pioneers, from Chicago Review Press. That’s because
it will be the first book that is sold in bookstores. All the other books were
for schools and libraries.
I wanted to write a book about the life of Laura Ingalls Wilder, who wrote Little House on the Prairie. My editor thought if I made it about all pioneers, it would sell better, so I did that. Most of the books on the show are fiction – stories. My book is nonfiction, which means everything in it is true. I had to do a lot of research to find all the facts I needed. It was fun for me to learn all about pioneers. I read lots of diaries, journals and letters that the pioneers wrote. That was so interesting. When I had all the facts, it was time to start writing. Of course, I couldn’t use everything I had read. I tried to pick out things that would be interesting to kids. When I quoted things the pioneers had written, I paid special attention to what the pioneer kids had to say. I knew kids would be interested in that. My book tells about how the West was explored and the men who blazed the trails. It tells about the trip West by train, boat, on foot, but mostly by covered wagon. A chapter tells about the kinds of homes pioneers had and how they built them. Another chapter tells about pioneer communities. Then there are chapters about pioneer men, pioneer women, and pioneer children. The end of the book tells about the end of the pioneer era. I’m going to read the first part of Chapter 7, Pioneer Children. This is the part that tells about children moving West – how they felt, what they did and what life was like for them on the trail. The book also has 21 activities for kids to do with their parents. You can learn to make butter, play pioneer games, make toys, and lots of other fun things.
My website isn’t live yet, but I hope to have it done by August 1. The URL will be www.authorpatmccarthy.com My blog, which will be linked to the website is available now, and can be found at www.patmccarthysauthorwebsite.blogspot.com

Once upon a time, in an English castle filled with a a spectacular garden filled with a rainbow of flowers, there lived a lovely Princess named Jasmine. She would stroll along the pathways. And one day, as she sat on the grass with her picnic basket in tow, she thought she heard a "meow!" Listen! I hear it! Don't you! She looked behind the bushes and found a little black kitten huddling in the shade. She shrieked out loud because she thought cats were bad luck!
The neXt day as the Princess went outdoors, she wandered over to the Lily pond. Much to her dismay, the little black kitten was basking in the sunshine! "Shoo! Shoo!" she cried but that kitten would not budge.
She looked up with sad green eyes and "meowed" her little heart out.
I hear it! Don't you? "O.K. You can stay but don't bring me bad luck or you have to go." The little black kitten purred and sang her "meow-mix"
song.
The Princess left to get some milk and meow-mix cat food for her new pet but what should she call her? "Silly Kitty!" cried the Princess. "That's
who you are." The kitty looked up at her and let out a loud "meoiw" of approval. And so began the wonderful friendship of the lovely Princess and her Silly Kitty. She took that kitty with her everywhere and introduced her to all of her friends. She bought her a basket to sleep in
and a new bowl to eat from.
And the Silly Kitty lived happily ever after with the lovely Princess
in their beautiful English Castle. And that, my dear reader, is the
ever-loving end of my story!

IN MY STORY, Janoose the Goose likes life in the barnyard very much. She is there visiting her cousin, Molly Duck and her baby, DeeDee. Her vacation is over and Janoose must go home because there are no job openings on the farm.
When her flight home arrives, the fox’s has begun a crime spree. Though the farm animals had a farm watch program once, they were no good at it! Janoose is the only one who can stop him.
In the late 1980's I wrote the first draft, which was a nursery rhyme. By the 1990's I had begun to think that the old type of nursery rhyme where the fox was going to do to the members of the barnyard was not what I wanted children reading my books to have to think about. I developed the plot line while shopping for pillows. I realized the farm community, especially those who have feathers, had another reason to be afraid of the fox and it gives Janoose the perfect reason to chase the fox away. This might give you a good hint as to what goes on in the story.

Feel free to add to the poem in a comment.

Barbara Ehrentreu wrote
"The Trouble with Follow the Leader" at http://viatouch.com/learn/storystation/stories/troublefollowleader.jsp.
First of all, thank you so much for inviting me to participate in this wonderful experience.
My story comes from a frightening experience I had when I was about eight years old. I lived in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn, NY in the 1950's. Life for kids was very free at that time. My parents owned a yard goods and trimmings store and everyone knew me on the block. I was allowed to go anywhere within a certain distance, which was my own block and across the street. But as kids we had great adventures in that small space. One of the games we always played was Follow the Leader. We'd use the backyards of apartment houses and other little nooks and crannies found on the street like the iron gate in my story. Whoever was the leader for the day could take you anywhere. You had to do whatever the leader did.
The girl in the story is based on me at that age and much of it is true. I did get my head stuck in that same iron gate and the fire department did have to come and get me out of there with The Jaws of Life. One of my best friends was named Terri, so I named the character after her. There was a luncheonette on the corner where I used to hang out. They had great egg creams and in summer I'd get a lime rickey. My own apartment was a little ways down the same street. Concrete was all around me until I went to the country in the summer for camp. My grandmother had a country home in Monroe, NY where the whole family went to escape the city's heat. There was no air conditioning then for us.
All the kids went to the same elementary school, PS167, but some went to the parochial school instead. Besides Follow the Leader we played Red Light, Green Light, Giant Steps, Potsy, Hop Scotch, Hit the Penny, and Jump rope. We had metal wheeled skates that clamped onto your shoes and needed a skate key to tighten them. I went to the movies alone, which meant walking two blocks by myself. I could never resist the knish store in the middle of my walk. Recently I got in contact with some people from my old neighborhood.
Though this story happened to me over fifty-five years ago I couldn't write it until my sister-in-law suggested I write it as a children's story. Whenever I had tried to write it before it had been as a memoir. The memory was so vivid, yet I couldn't bring it to life until this story. I hope you enjoy or enjoyed reading it. If you haven't read it, I hope you will decide to read it now.
In addition to this story I have written a YA novel that is still waiting for a home and I am in the middle of a second one. I have several non-fiction articles published online, a memoir and an adult story that is published on Moondance.org.
